Physical benefits are one of the main reasons people start jogging. Potential improvements can be cardiovascular health, increased muscle mass, potential weight loss, more energy, better lung capacity, and increased bone density. As a new runner starts a program, all of these qualities will start to show up and assist them in future runs.
Here is a helpful video that can teach people the importance of running and how to do it right!
As stated prior, running helps a person lose weight and gain muscle. This will lead to a better physical appearance and more attention from others around. As a result, many runners will have new relationships start, like new jogging friends or a new significant other. According to our class text, "Jogging also provides the opportunity for socialzation and camaraderie with friends who are also interested in jogging.[3]" Everybody likes to get attention from others and it is much easier as a runner.
In today's world we have a major problem with polution. Too many people are choosing the lazy way to get from point A to point B. It is not uncommon to see a person drive to the gas station for some candy when it is less than a mile away. Walking there would take 15-20 mins. Also, if a person decides to jog to the store to get their sugar fix, not only are they burning most of the calories on the way, but they are doing their part to save our home and getting a healthy workout all at the same time.
Frank Rosato states that walking or jogging in solitude provides the opportunity for introspection, or to mentally organize their day, maybe a class paper, or to just feel at peace with oneself.[6] Jogging can lower a persons anxiety, stress, and improve their attitude for the rest of the day. Joggers tend to have much better lungs than non-joggers and this can increase the amount of oxygen that gets to the human brain. A emprically tested study done on mice/rats shows that voluntarily running on a mouse wheel increases each mice/rats neuropsychiatric conditions.[7] This may sound pointless, but mice/rats have a very similar gene structure to humans and that is one reason they are used for testing so much in laboratories.
Every runner gains self-confidence in themselves from jogging. There are few different reasons for this; as stated earlier, it improves overall fitness, it increases physical attraction towards others, and it gives a person confidence in themselves that they can set their mind to something and stick with it. Personally, I have more confidence in myself now than I had three years ago when I started my jogging program. It gives me confidence in basketball, marathons, meeting new people, and even my school work. If I can run 4 miles, then I know I can type a 5, 10, or 15 page paper.
Motivation Tip
The easiest way to stay motivated to jog on a regular basis is to jog with a partner. Jogging with a friend or family member will make it easier to keep your commitment because they are committed as well. Joining a jogging group and running in a fun place can also help you make your jogging sessions a habit.[9]
